In 1961, Southern Illinois University Carbondale became the second public university in the State of Illinois to offer undergraduate degrees in engineering. Baccalaureate degrees offered include civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, and mining engineering. With the addition of a Ph.D. program in engineering science in 1986, SIUC offers graduate education at all degree levels including the Master of Science in civil, electrical, mechanical, and mining engineering. To better serve the technical manpower needs of industry, the College also offers bachelor’s degree programs in industrial and engineering technology and a Master of Science degree in manufacturing systems.
In the research arena, the College continues to expand and focus its research efforts in order to respond and to solve technical problems in the critical areas of communication, information processing, materials, manufacturing, natural resources, transportation, energy, and environment. The College has been successful in organizing interdisciplinary research teams involving industry and government. These include the Center for Advanced Friction Studies (CAFS) and the Materials Technology Center (MTC).
The College of Engineering is committed to extending its service to industry and business establishments in the region and the State through consultation, manufacturing extension service, technology transfer, cooperative education, internships, continuing education, and off-campus degree programs. By offering 27 semester hours of surveying coursework, the College is taking the lead in providing the required educational training for land surveyors in Illinois and surrounding states. The College also offers the Bachelor of Science in industrial technology off-campus at seven out-of-state locations and five Illinois locations including Scott Air Force Base.
From the B.S. to the M.S. and Ph.D. levels, the College of Engineering has reached maturity with an excellent and dedicated faculty and a solid foundation of research achievements. Annual enrollment in the College is more than 1000 undergraduate and 400 graduate students. Our student body is ethnically, culturally, and internationally diverse. With over 15,000 alumni, the College’s graduates continue to assume greater leadership roles in solving technical problems in the State, nation, and world.
