SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM
2010 Dates:
June 14, 2010 - July 23, 2010
This summer, the College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) will host the first Summer Bridge Program under its new initiative for incoming freshmen, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Since 1987, the Summer Bridge Program has provided for the effective integration of minority freshmen into the socio-academic environment of the College of Engineering. With the support of NSF, we are now able to provide such an experience for all incoming students who satisfy the criteria for participation. Those criteria are:
- Unconditionally admitted to SIUC for the fall semester of 2010 and selected engineering as major
- Completed the College of Engineering math placement test and will be enrolled in pre-calculus mathematics or Math 150 when the fall semester of 2010 begins
-or-
- Willing to fully participate in six-week Summer Bridge Program and follow the rules and guidelines of the program
Students who meet these criteria will be granted priority consideration for one of at least 30 slots. If there is space remaining, students who satisfy items #1 and #3 will be considered.
Summer Bridge 2010 will consist of the following non-credit bearing workshops:
- ENGR 111: Intensive pre-calculus mathematics review
- ENGR 110: Engineering science preview
- Freshman orientation seminar
The College of Engineering will pay for housing, meals, and books for participants while participating in the Summer Bridge Program 2010. However, participants will be required to cover the following expenses:
- Transportation to and from campus
- Weekend meals (though several cookouts will be sponsored by the College of Engineering)
- Entertainment
- Miscellaneous expenses (laundry, school supplies, phone calls, etc.)
Participants will also be required to sign an agreement which states that they will comply with all of the rules and guidelines of Summer Bridge 2010. Those who do not follow these guidelines may be asked to go home for the remainder of the summer session and to return at the beginning of the fall 2010 semester (which begins with Engineering Success Week).
