PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS >> RETENTION PROGRAMS
There are some exciting new programs being offered through the College of Engineering. These programs are designed to increase the retention rates of our students to among the highest in the country. Beginning fall 2007, an Engineering Residential College will created. This designation involves the following components:
- Freshmen and sophomores will live on campus in one of three residence halls in Thompson Point that are reserved for engineering and technology majors.
- Various sections of courses, included English Composition, Speech Communication, and Math, will be set aside for engineers only and will be taught in the engineering residence halls; the College provides supplemental instruction for engineering-designated sections of Math.
- Free tutoring will be offered to all students in a location adjacent to the Residential College
- Students will have peer mentors available to them in the residence halls, and will have faculty and practicing-engineer mentors assigned to them as well.
The Residential College is in addition to our Engineering Success Week, an August orientation program for newly enrolled students, and our summer math program and engineering learning skill course that are designed to ready underprepared students for collegiate calculus. We also continue to assist large numbers of students with internship and co-op opportunities and undergraduate research experiences. Overall, these programs represent important elements to helping students succeed in their academic and professional careers. For more information, please visit www.engr.siu.edu/ETTEP
