Mandara joined the Technology department in fall of 1999.  He received his bachelor degree in Industrial Technology from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1989 and M.S. in Manufacturing Engineering Technology from the University of Memphis in 1993.  He received his PhD from Iowa State University in Industrial Education and Technology in 1999.

His research interests include machine tool dynamics, manufacturing systems and processes and Lean manufacturing systems design.  Additional research interests include occupational safety and health, and musculoskeletal disorders.

He serves as the national safety division president for the National Association of Industrial Technology.  In 2005, he was nominated for the Black Engineer of the Year Award.
