This program aims to provide young women interested in the fields of science and math, the opportunity to explore the possibilities available within the study of engineering at Southern Illinois University Carbondale through hands on experiments and interactions with faculty, women in the program, and professionals in the field, all while having fun. From designing voice activation systems that enable the handicapped to enjoy greater independence to protecting pristine beaches from oil spills, engineers are involved. The rewards are both personal and financial.

Introduction to Engineering

The Introduction to Engineering Program, formerly the Summer Outreach Program, serves as a resource for high school students interested in learning more about engineering as an academic choice and career path. Since 2001 we have used this program to introduce various engineering disciplines, opportunities, and the future of the profession to area high school students. The Program is for sophomore- or junior-level students from area high schools. Students are invited to learn about engineering through hands-on experiments, demonstrations, and conversations with College of Engineering faculty and students.

This summer, the College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) will host the first Summer Bridge Program under its new initiative for incoming freshmen, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Since 1987, the Summer Bridge Program has provided for the effective integration of minority freshmen into the socio-academic environment of the College of Engineering. With the support of NSF, we are now able to provide such an experience for all incoming students who satisfy the criteria for participation. For more information, visit www.engr.siu.edu/ETTEP.
